Backyard sheds can provide much needed storage space, but all accessory structures must meet minimum standards pertaining to size, location, maintenance, etc. Please observe the following guidelines to ensure compliance with your accessory structure.
ConstructionPermits are required for all accessory structures over 120 square feet in area. All accessory structures over 120 square feet must be built to standards established in the MN State Building Code, and suitably anchored to the ground. Temporary structures such as carports are prohibited.
SetbacksAccessory structures 120 square feet in area or less must be located at least 5 feet from any property line and may not be closer than 20 feet to a side lot line when adjacent to a public right of way. Accessory structures greater than 120 square feet in area must be located at least 10 feet from rear property lines. Please contact the City of Apple Valley Planning Department at (952) 953-2575 to discuss the placement of your accessory building.
Location in Easement ProhibitedLocation in utility easements of record is prohibited without consent of the city and/or the public utility holding the easement.
MaintenanceAll accessory structures must be adequately maintained so as not to be an eyesore or a public nuisance.
