[ARCHIVED] How to do your part in keeping the right of way safe and accommodating to ordinary use!

Basketball hoops are a common accessory in the front yard of many homes. Please remember, though, that these are considered obstructions when placed in right of way areas (at the curb) and should be removed.

Basketball hoops are a common accessory in the front yard of many homes.  Please remember, though, that these are considered obstructions when placed in right of way areas (at the curb) and should be removed.

City ordinance prohibits obstruction to the normal use of right of way areas.  Right of way areas are found along the front portion of all properties, as well as along the side and rear of some corner properties and properties located in courts.  Right of way areas can extend 13-15 feet into front, side, or rear yards from the curb.  This means all items other than approved mailboxes and boulevard trees including basketball hoops, hockey nets, and similar items are considered obstructions.  During winter months obstructions of this type significantly hinder the efficient and thorough removal of snow from right of way areas, and can cause significant damage to snow removal equipment in some cases.  Please remember to remove such obstructions of the right of way in boulevard areas at your property.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding obstructions in the right of way or to report obstructions in your neighborhood please contact Ben Pierson in Code Enforcement by phone at 952.953.2571; or by email at bpierson@ci.apple-valley.mn.us.
