Did you know that coyotes have adapted to life in suburban areas?  Coyote sightings are not unusual in many suburban communities including Apple Valley.  Here is some helpful information regarding urban coyotes!

Although not common-place; numerous coyote sightings have been reported over the past several years in Apple Valley.  This might suggest that coyotes have adapted or grown more comfortable to living in closer contact with humans.  Many neighborhoods in Apple Valley, in fact, do have larger wooded lots and provide ideal habitat for coyotes that primarily feed on mice and rabbits according to the DNR.  The DNR also notes that “Healthy wild coyotes avoid people, and no attacks have ever occurred in Minnesota.”  Coyotes generally shy away from humans and reports of attacks on small domestic cats and dogs are rare.  The Minnesota DNR offers more information on urban coyotes including, do’s and don’ts, and recommendations for how to peaceably co-exist can be found on their website by following the link provided below.

Reports of sightings in your neighborhood may be made to Val Abbott in Apple Valley Code Enforcement by phone at 952.953.2570; or by email at vabbott@ci.apple-valley.mn.us.  This information will only be used for monitoring purposes.  Removal of unwanted pests including coyotes is the responsibility of property owners.
