[ARCHIVED] Fall is the Time to Plan for Winter Erosion Control Needs Before Frozen Ground Increases Costs

IMG_20170202_142133634

Erosion and sediment control is more expensive to install during the winter. Frozen ground increases the cost of trenching typical practices like silt fence. A little planning can save you money.

The City of Apple Valley, and State of Minnesota for sites an acre or more in size, still require erosion and sediment controls on construction sites in winter.  Although less erosion occurs in winter because the ground is usually frozen, construction sites need to be prepared for periodic thaws.  The cost of silt fence installation and other sediment control practices that require trenching often more than double in winter.  Here are a few tips:

  • Consider starting winter wheat or other fall appropriate cover crops for erosion control.
  • Some products may not cure at frozen temperatures or cannot be applied on snow.  Make sure you have an accurate understanding of what will and will not work in winter.
  • Consider how the plow and drifting snow will affect your practice and plan accordingly.

Keep in mind that City staff are available to help if you have technical questions.  MnDOT and the University of Minnesota are also great sources of information.
