[ARCHIVED] Don't Delay - Prune Trees Now to Avoid Spreading Tree Diseases

Winter tree pruning from bucket truck

When a tree is pruned or “wounded” it can give off certain chemicals. Did you know that some insects can be attracted to these chemicals? It sounds cool, but sometimes insects carry fungi or other pathogens from an infected tree into a healthy tree. This is the primary way Dutch Elm Disease and Oak Wilt (two deadly tree diseases) are spread to new areas. Most insects are not active in the winter, so experts recommend pruning before April 1st to keep trees healthy. This gives the tree time to heal before insects come out of dormancy. In case we have a really early spring (it has happened!), plan on pruning in February.
