Fences can bring a great amount of privacy and security to a property. If you are considering installing a fence here are a few tips on Apple Valley’s fence requirements that can help you ensure your fence will comply with city ordinances.
All fences must be located entirely on the owner’s property. However, boundary fences may be constructed on a property line provided the adjoining property owner gives written consent. A survey may be needed to verify the property line. Please note that the City of Apple Valley does not provide surveying services; you must contact a private surveying company to obtain a survey.
Fences over 7 feet in height require a building permit and must meet construction standards of the Minnesota State Building Code. Fences may be erected up to a maximum height of eight (8) feet in the rear and side yard areas of a lot. Front yard fences cannot exceed 3 ½ feet in height. Fences on corner properties must meet traffic visibility standard illustrated on the attached diagram.
Fences should be maintained in good repair and free of deterioration; firmly anchored to the ground and in no stage of collapse; and free of any hazardous defects. All exterior wood surfaces must be of a natural weathering type, stained, painted or similarly covered with a protective treatment.
Temporary fences are not allowed for more than a period of 30 days. Barbed wire and electric fences are prohibited in all districts except for agricultural districts.
