There is no better time of year than the holidays to ensure that all safety features in your home are in good condition and working properly! Safety features can include smoke detectors, cover plates for all outlets and light switches, and even windows.
Safety features may include smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke detectors should be located on each level of the home and in each bedroom. Carbon monoxide detectors should be located within 10 feet of each bedroom. All smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be in proper working order and tested monthly or per manufactures recommendations. Batteries should be replaced twice a year (replace batteries when changing your clocks).
Holiday lighting adds to the charm of the season, but extension cords should be tested and approved for use commonly indicated by UL, ANSI, CSA labels on the product and used only according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Check temporary lighting and wiring for holes, breaks, frayed or open wiring. Temporary wiring should be securely anchored for outdoor applications and located out of high traffic areas for interior applications. All outlets and switch cover plates should be securely in place and in good repair.
Bedroom windows should be accessible and in proper working order to provide means egress if necessary in the event of a fire. Windows requiring use of hand cranks should have hand cranks provided and in proper working order.
