[ARCHIVED] Extend the life and improve the appearance of exterior wood surfaces around your property!

Fresh Stained Deck

Spring and summer are a great time to complete home improvement projects around the house. Protecting exterior wood surfaces like decks or fences from the elements such as wind, rain, and sun increases their longevity and can look great!

All exterior wood surfaces should be protected from the wind, rain, and sun by means of a protective covering or treatment such as paint, stain, or wood sealer. Homeowners should plan for reapplication of treatment to wood surfaces when color and surface distress appear, or at a minimum when 20% or more of the structure’s exterior wood surface area is exposed or deteriorated. Apply stain when temperatures are consistently between 50°—90°F. For best results avoid applying stain or treatments in direct sunlight or less than 12—24 hours before rainfall.

Common surfaces requiring such treatment are house and garage siding, doors, windows, trim, soffit, and fascia, porches, decks, and fences. Protective treatments will protect your wood surfaces from deterioration and rot which can be caused by exposure to the sun, wind, moisture, and insects. Not only will treatments protect your exterior wood surfaces, they will improve the appearance of your home, and can extend the life of the wood surfaces saving you money in the long run. Green treated wood and composite materials do not require protective treatments, and might be an alternative to traditional wood and lumber materials for your next home improvement project!
