On May 14. 2021, Governor Walz announced his intent to end the statewide mask mandate in place since July of 2020. This change aligns Minnesota with newly released Centers For Disease Control guidance for mask wearing by those who are vaccinated. The end of the mask mandate does not require those who are maskless to prove their vaccination status.
Although a sign of the progress our state has made in our fight against COVID-19, the change raised a number of questions from our residents. We hope this FAQ answers many of them. As always, please reach out to your city staff for clarification.
Does the City have a local mask mandate?
No, but residents should know the new executive order still requires mask wearing on public transit and other places you may find yourself. Please pay attention to signage.
Are masks required inside city facilities?
Members of the public should comply with updated public health guidance as it applies to them. Customers and visitors inside city facilities will not be questioned regarding their vaccination status.
Are masks required Inside businesses?
The decision to require masking is now left to individual businesses and organizations to decide what they feel is best. If you should have questions about mask requirements you should seek out a store employee for clarification.
How will the city address mask complaints moving forward?
The police department will continue to partner with our community development staff to address COVID-19 related concerns. However, with the end of the Governor's order, the police department does not have the legal authority to address mask concerns.
Where can I read the order for myself?
The Governor's Executive Orders are posted at the following link when finalized.
