[ARCHIVED] Composting tips for a steward of the environment and a courteous neighbor!

Full Compost Bin

Composting can be a great way of reducing household waste and generating nutrient rich soil. The following are composting guidelines that should be followed to reduce undesirable impacts on neighboring properties.

All compost material must be confined to a container. Compost material may include everything from a combination of organic household waste such as food scraps and coffee grounds to yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings, and small twigs. For best composting results add a good variety of material types and consistency, till occasionally, keep the compost material damp, and ventilate to help speed the rate of decomposition.

Compost material can emit foul odors especially during the heat of summer months. For this reason all compost containers should be located no closer than 5 feet to any property line and no closer than 20 feet to a side lot line when adjacent to a public right of way. Containers may be built by hand, purchased at a local home improvement retailer, or through The Recycling Association of Minnesota. More information can be found by following the link provided below.
