[ARCHIVED] Current Phone Scam

Several residents reported receiving phone call scams.

Recently the Apple Valley Police Department has received calls from residents reporting they have received calls stating loved ones have been involved in a car crash with gang members. The residents are told they need to wire money in order for their loved one to be released. The suspect phone number these calls are received from lists to the Massachusetts area. It appears the victims may have been selected using an auto dialer as the numbers seem to be in sequential order.

If you or your friends/neighbors receive a phone call such as this, please be advised that this is a scam and hang up. The callers may report things to you that make sense (names of people in your family, vehicle makes of family members, etc.) to make the call sound believable. If you fear something has happened to a loved one, please contact other family members to check into the story first. DO NOT wire money to anyone you do not know. Please share this information with family and friends so they will not become a victim of this scam.
